"Carnival of Chaos" Alexis Soul-Gray discusses her new exhibition with Plaster Magazine

Alexis Soul-Gray has discussed her creative process, inspirations, and her most-recent exhibition Ghost Light at the William Hine Gallery in Camberwell with Plaster Magazine

In the interview, Alexis describes her works as “stridently bold pictures… careering across the canvas in revelrous parades and eccentric carnivals,” layered with sweeping washes of colour. The centerpiece, Ghost Light, the final scene (2025), is portrayed as “a stage-like bacchanal of amateur dramatics” populated with fantastical figures — jesters, fairies, mime artists, even a snarling wolf in a dress.

Alexis also reflects on how her visual language evolves: while she draws on art historical references — for instance, Picasso’s Rose Period — she’s also inspired by more humble sources like Victorian trading cards. She talks candidly about her tension between change and instinct, and how, even when she tries to reinvent her style, she finds herself returning to a deeper, more chaotic way of working.
